Planning

‘To fail to plan is to plan to fail’

In life, as in sport, it’s important to know where the goalposts are. So the importance of a good plan can not be overstated. What is it about planning though, in spite of the fact that we rationally understand its value, we engage with it so reluctantly?

The real value of planning is efficiency in execution. Time spent on planning before you start a day, a week, a month or a year will save lots of time later on. Above all it will create clarity and focus throughout the period of execution.

But it’s not just about the time saving or the clarity and focus it creates, there is magic in planning. When we plan we consider our desired outcome. This consideration or imagining process increases the likelihood of achievement. This is not just ‘mumbo jumbo’, it’s scientifically factual. An understanding of how the brain functions will enlighten you on this.

So take time to plan, daily, weekly, monthly, and now that we are in the first month of the New Year why not complete an annual plan? A personal plan should incorporate a comprehensive list of headings to include, work, health and fitness, relationships, interests and hobbies, holidays, community involvement, personal development etc. There are numerous templates available on the web.

An hour spent planning your week can save as much as 10 hours during the week. Take some time out, ideally on Friday afternoon, to plan the next week. You will feel the benefit of it over the weekend and will hit the ground running on Monday morning.

Once you have completed the plan start putting it into action and review your progress at regular intervals to make adjustments as appropriate. The plan frees you up to execute without having to stop and wonder what’s next. It leaves you free to live in the moment and be more creative. Don’t beat yourself up if you find you need to deviate. Try to learn from the required change and factor it into your next plan. The process of planning is more important than the finished plan…‘plans are nothing, planning is everything’ someone once said!
